Exciting New Updates for the 2027 Toyota GR86

July 1st, 2026 by

The 2027 Toyota GR86 made its debut among sports car enthusiasts at FuelFest, which is located in the Bay Area of California. This sports car was refreshed with enhancements to create a more connected feel between the driver and the road. The GR86 continues to improve its rear-wheel drive handling and sharpen its control and agility.

Improved Power

Since the focus for any sports car enthusiast is on performance, that’s where engineers made adaptations for the 2027 GR86. Throttle calibration was refined to create a smoother response when you press on the pedal. The downshift from fifth to fourth was seamless and provided more spirited driving. While the changes weren’t major, they make subtle differences in the way the car handles and feels.

The GR86 features a 2.4L four-cylinder Boxer engine, which delivers up to 228 horsepower with 184 lb.-ft of torque. You’ll have a choice of either a six-speed manual transmission or an automatic transmission with both the base and Premium trims.

Enhanced Look

Toyota added a new exterior color for the 2027 GR86 with Thunder. This gray color can shift shades based on the light around it. The changing hues accentuates the sculpted curves, which highlights the sporty look. Inside, the treatments have been updated for a sportier look with a driver-centric cockpit. Safety features and convenience amenities have been increased to fit many different lifestyles, making this a practical everyday car for commuting to New Orleans and running errands in Gretna or Kenner.

Cockpit Red is a new interior color that includes black Ultrasuede accents with red leather trim on the side bolsters. Red door accents and floor mats add to the racecar feel. However, you also have a black interior option, which includes black leather trim and black Ultrasuede upholstery with black stitching and all-black treatment. For the base trim, you have six-way adjustable front seats with black GR-embossed fabric.

Performance Package

Both the base and Premium trims of the 2027 Toyota GR86 can add the Performance Package. This package includes Brembo brakes with SACHS dampers. What makes these dampers unique is that they are designed to absorb vibrations at different speeds to provide a more comfortable ride. They maximize contact with the ground to enhance steering.

This sports car also features red-painted Brembo four-piston brakes in the front with two-piston brakes in the rear. Stopping is just as important as accelerating in a sports car and these brakes do the job well.

One of the most impressive aspects of the engineering for the GR86 is the way the design combines stability and agility. Diagonal cross members and high-strength fasteners join the frame and front suspension together while the high-strength fasteners and a full ring structure work together in the rear. The underbody has a structural adhesive to help the care feel more connected and provide a stable ride. Aluminum on the front fenders, hood, and roof panel reduce the weight of this car work to provide a lightweight feel.

This sports car is loaded with safety technology, starting with Toyota Star Safety System. Each new model comes with Connected Services and an Active Safety Suite.
