What’s Wrong with My Headlights?
When most people have headlight problems, it’s usually because of burned-out bulbs, electrical trouble, or problems with the charging system. Looking at what lights are out can help figure out your headlight problems.
When one light is out: Generally, this is a burned-out bulb. If replacing the bulb doesn’t fix the problem, it may be due to problems with wiring or fuses.
When high-beams or low-beams don’t work: Check bulbs first, then check out relays and switches.
If both headlights stop working: If this is the case, your problem is probably an electrical issue.
Why Would My Headlights Be Dim?
If your lights come on and turn off without trouble but aren’t very bright it can mean a problem with the charging system, worn-out bulbs (which get dim over time), or foggy lenses. To remedy the problem, clean the lenses, try replacing the bulb, and if these steps don’t work, set up a headlight diagnostic test to determine the problem with your lights.
Types of Headlights
Halogen: These are incandescent lights with tungsten filaments surrounded by argon and nitrogen gases. They are commonly used, widely available, inexpensive, and dimmable. They do generate a lot of heat, use more energy than other types, and are short-lived.
High Intensity Discharge (HID or Xenon): These headlights are named for the gas that powers them. This type of headlight operates much like neon lights. They last up to eight times longer than halogen lights and are twice as bright. They illuminate a larger area while using less energy, but they are also quite expensive and can blind oncoming traffic if not properly installed.
LED: These headlights are quickly becoming the most popular type of light because it balances some of the pros and cons of the other types of lights. LEDs have greater brightness and cover a larger area than HIDs. They also use less energy without the HID’s glare. However, they still generate heat in surrounding areas, but the LEDs themselves remain cool. They can cost five times more than HIDs, but they last much longer.
